The contract zone has many names – the middle ground, the common ground, or the ‘bargaining range’.

The contract zone is the place where outcomes overlap and the possibility of agreement exists. Before entering a conversation or negotiations, parties need to determine three positions: ideal settlement, realistic settlement and fall-back position.
