WOMEN and SOUTH AFRICAN TRADE UNION STRUGGLE

You will find here a collection of magazine and journal articles as well as trade union publications which attempt to chart the history of the struggle of women workers in South Africa in the last 25 to 30 years. They make no claim to tell the whole story. We are sure that others have different material. We invite you to send it to us so that the story can grow, remain alive and become more complete.

In this site we have focused on two broad areas of the history of the struggle of and for women workers:

WOMEN, GENDER and THE UNIONS
This charts the history of the struggle of women within the South African Trade Unions of the last 25 to 30 years. It includes the process of setting up focused gender structures in unions and federations. It represents the South Africa Trade Union movement’s struggle to build women leadership.

WOMEN, GENDER and THE BOSSES
This documents the history of the struggle for women's rights in the workplace. Maternity Provision was a key early demand. CCAWUSA (and then SACCAWU) was often in the vanguard, winning the first comprehensive packages of rights for women workers.

We have also included, to assist you with following up other sources, articles which describe a variety of relevant publications.
